Albert Eubanks Kennedy was born on September 29 th , 1947 in Harlem New York to Veronica Wilborn Kennedy and Albert Eubanks. His mother Veronica studied voice at Juilliard and his father Albert graduated from Tuskegee University however both died very young which would have a profound effect on who he would become. He was raised by his late maternal grandmother Marie Waymer Wilborn (Grandmama) who had a lasting influence on his life. Albert grew up and received his primary and secondary education in the small town of Elloree—which he fondly called "the capital of South Carolina". Al attended Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU)—a Historically Black College and University—in Charlotte, North Carolina and was a member of the Class of '69. Those who knew him know that he was a staunch HBCU man! Albert was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Vietnam and was Honorably Discharged. After Vietnam he relocated to New York where he worked for Albert Einstein and Jacobi Hospitals before settling at General Signal/SPX. He retired after 20+ years as an electronics technician.
When Albert and Mercedes met it seemed as if they were destined to be together. Upon meeting Al for the first time Mercedes' grandmother told her: "if he asks you to marry him, you marry him. That's the man for you!" In August, 1976 Albert married Mercedes Simons. Of this union there would be 4 children: Akil, Yohance, Taadhameka and Nkosi. Albert was a devoted family man. His greatest source of joy and pride were his children. Whether it was basketball, Little League baseball, poetry or dance—he was there. He would always stress the importance of college (always reminding them to consider the HBCU's). When 3 of his children received full academic scholarships and graduated from HBCU's-- Akil and Taadhameka (Hampton University) and Nkosi (South Carolina State University) he could not have been prouder. He also delighted in mentoring young people especially Alicia (niece) and Travon (affectionately known as his youngest son). He would take them to Broadway plays, football games, Alvin Ailey and/or the circus. In June of 2017 Albert was honored by Collin Allen as Mentor of the Year. Additionally, the Westchester County Board of Legislators declared June 21 st , 2017 Albert Eubanks Kennedy Day in Westchester County, New York.
Besides his immediate family, he loved Family—aunts, uncles, cousins. "Jr." as he was known by family, was always eager to meet new family members and loved attending the Family Reunions. He'd say: "you can't just have family, you have to Be family". Friends and family alike knew that they could count on Albert if they needed help. He was always available.
Music was a lifelong love of his. Al especially loved "Old School R & B". He sang professionally with several bands and was a finalist on the Apollo Amateur Night.
Albert Eubanks Kennedy departed this life on Sunday March 29 th ,2020 at Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx.
