Ms. Catherine "Shorty" Sledge of 911 Hampton Street, Elloree died on July 9, 2015 at MUSC Medical Center, Charleston.
Catherine Sledge, daughter of the late Neatha Sellers and Walter P. Jones was born in Elloree, SC where she began her childhood education. As a child Catherine was given the name Shorty, which stuck throughout her life. If someone said, Catherine or Cathy, friends and family would say "Who". So Shorty it was. As a teen, she and her sister moved up north to continue their education and graduated from high school.
Catherine pursued cosmetology and became a licensed beautician. However, she went into the nursing and healthcare field, which she loved and retired after years of service. After retiring from Bellevue Hospital in New York City, she moved back home to Elloree, SC, where her humble beginnings started, and where she continued to do part time work in the same field.
Those that knew her, knew she always kept busy and moved around. Unfortunately, earlier this year as her health began to take its toll, it slowed her down from the many activities that she did daily. As her health fluctuated, her family prayed for a better outcome, but God knew otherwise what He wanted. He wanted her to come to be with Him.
Cathy "Shorty" Sledge leaves behind a devoted family that tried their best to keep a smile on her face during her tough times. She is survived by her sister Margaret Jones Taylor of Richmond, VA; her brother Walter Irving Jones of Baltimore, MD; two aunts Alifair Felder of Elloree, SC and Corrine (Ernest) Duncan of Washington, DC; a devoted cousin and friend, Betty Felder of Elloree, SC; two devoted nieces, Karen Martin of Richmond, VA and Anita Martin of Baltimore, MD; two devoted nephews, Melvin Jones of Portland, OR and Dennis Martin of San Diego, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that all showed love to the very end.
Funeral services for Ms. Sledge will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, Santee with the Rev. C. J. Way, Pastor officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:00AM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
