Obituary

Mrs. Mattie Waymer Armstrong was born in Elloree, South Carolina, on April 21, 1921, the oldest daughter of nine children, to the late Robert and Mamie Collier Waymer. She attained her Bachelor's Degree from South Carolina State College in 1942, and her Master's Degree from Columbia University in 1947. She enjoyed a career spanning thirty-six years of which twenty-five years were spent serving students, Morris Brown College, and the community in Atlanta. She was Chairperson of the Home Economics Department and organized the Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management Curriculum at Morris Brown.

In 1975, Mattie Waymer married Major Noah Armstrong, Retired. She moved with her husband to Hampton, Virginia, where she continued to be an active community leader, supporting her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and numerous other professional organizations. She was a leader in organizing the Tidewater Peninsula Morris Brown Alumni Chapter and the South Carolina State College Tidewater Peninsula Alumni Chapter. As community and faith leaders, she and Noah were active members of Hampton University Memorial Church.

In 1989, Major and Mrs. Armstrong hosted the family reunion – Williams, Waymer, Carrion, Murray – in Hampton.

Mrs. Armstrong moved back to Atlanta after her husband's death in 1999. She has resided at Arbor Terrace at Cascade assisted living care. She was recently moved after a brief hospitalization to Christian City in Union City, Georgia, where she was under hospice care. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2015.

In addition to her community, faith, and school service, Mrs. Armstrong was most proud of her work with the State Department of Education to develop a Cooperative Program for student teaching in Home Economics at Atlanta University; her appointment by President Lyndon B. Johnson to serve as a member of the President's Advisory Council; and her service as a member of the Task Force to study, analyze and implement findings of the Earl J. McGrath report on "The Changing Mission of Home Economics. "
